The 'Unforeseen'

How to deal with unforeseen events while day trading

When Technology Fails You in Day Trading (and How to Handle It)

Let’s be real: day trading is stressful enough without your gear turning against you. You’ve got your plan, your levels, your risk all lined up… and then your internet cuts out mid-trade. Or your mouse dies just as you’re about to flatten your position. These things happen more often than you’d think — and if you’re not ready for them, they can cost you more than any bad setup.

Here’s how to deal with some of the most common “trader horror stories.”

----------------------

1. The Internet Goes Dark

You’re in a position, candles are flying, and suddenly… nothing. Your charts freeze. Your heart drops. This is the nightmare every trader dreads.

How to handle it:

· Backup Internet: Always keep a plan B. A mobile hotspot or phone tether can save you in seconds. Test it once in a while so you’re not fumbling in the moment.

· Broker’s Trade Desk: Save the phone number to your broker’s trade desk in your phone. If all else fails, you can call them to close your position.

· Use Stops: Never skip a stop-loss order. If your platform disconnects, your broker’s server still has it. That stop could save your account.

----------------------

2. The Mouse Betrayal

Ever tried to exit a trade and your wireless mouse just… won’t move? Or the keyboard refuses to type? Yeah, not fun.

How to handle it:

· Wired Backup: Keep a cheap wired mouse and keyboard plugged in or within arm’s reach. They don’t need batteries, and they don’t quit on you mid-trade.

· Spare Batteries/Charger: Stock up. Seriously. A $2 battery can save you hundreds.

· Hotkeys: If your platform supports hotkeys, set them up for emergencies — “flatten all” should be one keystroke away.

----------------------

3. Platform Freezes at the Worst Time

You’re staring at your charts, trying to make a decision, and then the platform just locks up. No clicks, no updates, nothing. The market doesn’t care that your software is having a meltdown.

How to handle it:

· Restart Fast: Kill the program and reopen. Keep your login info saved securely so you’re back in action quickly.

· Web Portal Backup: Most brokers let you manage trades on their website. Bookmark it now so you’re not hunting when every second counts.

· Keep It Clean: Don’t overload your trading computer with random apps, games, or a dozen Chrome tabs. Keep it lean so your platform has all the horsepower.

Also: Make sure the stock you are trading isn't halted. Halts can create the appearance of a frozen chart.

4. The Trader’s Preparedness Checklist

Think of it like risk management for your gear:

· Backup internet? ✔️

· Wired mouse/keyboard ready? ✔️

· Broker’s phone number saved? ✔️

· Hotkeys tested? ✔️

· “What if” drills practiced? ✔️

When (not if) something goes wrong, you’ll be ready to react instead of panic.

Final Word

You can’t avoid technical failures, but you can control how prepared you are. The difference between a blown-up account and a minor hiccup usually comes down to whether you had a backup plan.

Trading is about staying calm under pressure. So when the internet drops, your mouse dies, or your platform freezes, don’t lose your head. Breathe, follow your backup plan, and get back in the game.
